None of these materials are highly flammable. Inorganic salts are generally noncombustible as well. Salts containing organic groups are in principle combustible, although they may burn with difficulty.
Reactivity
Compounds in this group react as weak acids to neutralize bases. These neutralizations generate heat, but less than is generated by neutralization of inorganic acids, inorganic oxoacids, or carboxylic acids. Many of these compounds catalyze organic reactions.
Toxicity
Widely variable. Solutions of these materials are generally corrosive to skin and irritating to mucous membranes.
Other Characteristics
Materials in this group are generally soluble in water, though some also may react with water. The resulting solutions contain moderate concentrations of hydrogen ions and have pHs of less than 7.0.
